Be The Change
Injury and Violence Professional: The staff at the trauma center always encouraged patients to wear their seat belts. It occurred to the trauma staff, that even though employees were talking the talk, were they in fact walking the walk? A study was done to evaluate seat belt use by the staff. With 10,000 employees, it was discovered that the staff had a lower seat belt use rates than the surrounding community. A year-long campaign was launched to educate employees about the importance of seat belt use and safe driving practices. The staff decided to “be the change” they wanted to see in the world. At the completion of the campaign the employees had increased their seat belt use. They felt that they could provide education and outreach as they had now become the safety model for the community.
